Project
Medbury School
Location
109 Clyde Road, Ilam, Christchurch 8041
Solution
Structured Cabling
Duration
November 2021 – February 2023
The Project
Stage 1
A site-wide upgrade of the optical fibre network backbone cabling was required due to the necessity of the disconnection and relocation of the main server communications cabinet and other site specifics.
Prior to the installation of the schools fibre network backbone cabling new underground ducting was required to each block of the school, this was achieved by a mixture of open trenching and multiple directional drill shots.
A temporary administration hub was also completed so the school could to maintain operational during the project along with internal structured cabling (copper and fibre) upgrades were required for the main block / classrooms and associated blocks / classrooms.
Horizontal directional drilling is a precision drilling technique that can be used for a range of underground installations. It is used when trenching or excavating is not practical, possible, or environmentally / economically viable.
The niche services CT Group offer we have the expertise in house to provide directional drilling as an option, overall a cleaner and faster option then open trenching and was the best solution for the majority of this site due to the amount of concrete and to minimize disruption to the school a large section of the work was completed out of hours or during term break.
The underground ducting and pit installation work was a mixture of directional drilling and open trenching all reinstatement works was completed by CT Group.
Stage 2 & 3
A tight time constraint was given and CT group delivered within the program set by Higgs construction and completed by the end the Xmas break, the schools network was fully operational when back from the Christmas holidays.
The stage incorporated the following:
- Installation of x2 45ru main server communication cabinets
- Installation of x1 12ru communication cabinet
- Relocation / replacement of x1 communication cabinet
- Optical fibre backbone cabling to associated blocks
- Fusion splicing of optical fibres cables
- Installation of Cat6a FTP structured cabling solution to main block classrooms and associated block classrooms.
- Disconnection of the existing main server and administration cabinets
- Relocation of the incoming enable fibre & voice / lift connection to the new server room
- Testing and commissioning (copper & fibre)
Stage 4
With all the critical and intricate work completed stage 1-3 the remaining stage involves structured cabling of the new administration building and board masters’ residence.
Preparation work has been finalised this will proceed into a smooth transition into the work required for last hurdle of project.
Cat6A FTP structured cabling the new administration building and board masters’ residence and fully operation network completed within time and budget for the schools centenary year.
